So, the search for a CMS that is good overall, and allows for mutli-blog, multi-user publishing is becoming more long and arduous than I imagined. Textpattern, after several different hacks, does not work for multiple users in a way that any of us would much like. I set up a main blog and a sideline blog, and before I knew it, I'd edited the template for the main blog with the revisions I wanted on the sideline. If I'm getting that easily confused with just two blogs, I don't know how we'd manage with four or five.

Next I tried Lyceum. which is a multi-blog hack of Wordpress developed by ibiblio.org. That sounded just fantastic. However I couldn't actually get into the admin screens to edit blog, users, or much of anything. Alas, methinks it is still too early in development.

Then it was on to Boast Machine, which was quite promising and looked pretty cool. It took a little doing to get it properly working for the subdomain/sideline blog. However, I ultimately got really pissed off on it's ugly entry screen (replete with a side menu of nothing but smilies) and it's rather obfuscated method for editing layout. Really it's meant to be deployed with a set of templates for users to use out-of-box, not to customize to their slightest whim.

I'll give Wordpress MU a whirl, and report back. I test-drove the backend on Opensourcecms.com and kind of wanted to shoot myself in the face. But then I've been thoroughly spoiled by Movabletype and Textpattern, so maybe the second viewing will yield a better response.
